In order to comply with the TCPA and CTIA regulations and send text marketing messages to customers, there are certain best practices you should follow below.


Part A: Getting customers prior written consent to subscribe for SMS Marketing


Step 1/3 - Enable accept marketing option


Set up Shopify Checkout SMS Marketing Compliance.
Head over to your Shopify Settings > Checkout.


Scroll down to Email Marketing and check “Show a sign-up option at checkout”.



Confirm the changes, and click “save”.



Step 2/3 - Add consent text


Scroll down to Checkout language and click “Manage checkout language”.



Scroll down to the “Checkout marketing” field.

Enter this text in the box:


Sign up for exclusive offers and news via text messages & email.



Confirm the changes, and click “save”.



Step 3/3 - Change phone placeholder text


Scroll to the “Phone label” field.
Enter this text in the box:


Phone number for updates and exclusive offers



Confirm the changes, and click “save”.

Good job ? you are now getting your customers consent to send text marketing.

Part B: Adding a checkout disclaimer


Head over to your Online Store tab > Themes > Actions > Edit languages.



Open the “Checkout & system“ tab.



Scroll down to Checkout shop policies and under Privacy Policy paste this text:

Enter this text in the box:


I consent to receive recurring automated marketing by text message through an automatic telephone dialing system. Consent is not a condition to purchase. STOP to cancel. Message and Data rates may apply.



Confirm the changes, and click “save”.


Good job ? you’ve added a checkout disclaimer. Let’s move on to the final part.



Part C: Adding a checkout disclaimer


Head over to your Shopify Settings > Legal.



Head over to your “Privacy policy” input.

If you don’t have one yet, click on Create from template.

If you do have one in place, skip to the next step.



Add the following text inside your privacy policy:



Text Marketing and notifications:
By entering your phone number in the checkout and initialising a purchase, subscribing via our subscription form or a keyword, you agree that we may send you text notifications (for your order, including abandoned cart reminders) and text marketing offers. Text marketing messages will not exceed 100 a month. You acknowledge that consent is not a condition for any purchase.
If you wish to unsubscribe from receiving text marketing messages and notifications reply with STOP to any mobile message sent from us or use the unsubscribe link we provided you with in any of our messages. You understand and agree that alternative methods of opting out, such as using alternative words or requests will not be accounted as a reasonable means of opting out. Message and data rates may apply.
You can contact us for more information. If you wish to opt out please follow the procedures above.


Confirm the changes, and click “save”.


Well done ?  your privacy policy is up to date.
